Students: Will I have access to my readings after the course is over?

Access to readings, following the conclusion of a course, will be dependent on where each specific reading is hosted. There are four ways that course readings can be hosted on Canvas:

    Readings hosted on Canvas

Any files or resources that are hosted on the Canvas site itself will always be accessible, even after you graduate. To know if a course reading falls under this category, look for these icons: ...

What is the difference between Availability Dates & Due Date?

Availability dates define when students are able to view assignments and when the last date and time to submit to an assignment is. Availability dates are not required, but may be useful in limiting access if desired.

Available From: The date and time for when assignments will become accessible by students.

Available Until: The date and time for when students can no longer submit to an assignment.

The Due Date defines the date and time when a submission to an assignment is considered late. If...

How do I message/email the entire course?

    Option One: Canvas Inbox

Messaging through the Canvas Inbox is quick and efficient. No extra configuration is necessary, all that is needed are:

    • Course Name(s)
    • Name of recipient(s), role(s), group(s), or section(s).

    Managing participants

To invite people to a meeting in progress, select Invite and Remind from the Quick Start tab. You can invite people by email or by sending a link to your meeting. Select Participant > Entry and Exit Tone to ensure these tones are turned off, as they are potentially disruptive to your meeting.

It is possible to restrict access to a meeting, preventing anyone new from joining a meeting -- whether they were invited or not. Select Meeting>Restrict Access to do this. Click on Meeting>Restore Access to begin allowing new participants in again.

When are course notifications sent out to users?

Course notifications are sent out to all members of a course. Notifications are sent out when a specific action has been completed which will trigger a notification to be sent out. For instance, if a new graded assignment was created and saved and published all at once, this would trigger a notification to be sent out to members of the course.

Note that before a notification can be sent out, the following conditions must be met:

    1. Course is published
    2. User has not disabled notifications to be sent out (same may be...

How do time zones work in Canvas?

Time zones in Canvas are available in three different flavors, and should be configured accordingly in order to display the correct time.

System-wide time zone: This is the default time zone set by the Canvas administrators that applies to all courses within an account (root-account setting).

Course time zone: This time zone setting can be changed per course to suit the needs of the teaching team; otherwise it will follow what is the default system-wide time zone

    Personal time zone: ...

Yes, students are able to see the previous announcements if they have been imported over into the current site.

They cannot access the announcements page directly using the breadcrumb navigation at the top of the screen after they click on the notification from the global activity stream.

Can I control who can see certain pages on my Canvas site?

Different content within Canvas can be organized and shared in different ways, either by using sections or groups within a Canvas site.

For instance, you could use sections to apply differentiated due dates for Section A and Section B, for a particular assignment or graded discussion. Groups also function in a similar manner in regards to group assignments.

For pages, unfortunately there isn't a way to enable/disable a page for a particular group/section of students within a course site. By design pages are intended to be visible to the entire site. In more niche...
