Zoom Updates - October 2021

Some important updates to Zoom have been released with particular impact on class management.

  • Hosts and co-hosts can screen share in the main section and project to all Breakout Rooms. Active sharing in the breakout sessions is interrupted and any annotation or whiteboarding prompts the sharer to save them before viewing the shared screen from the host. Host and participants must use the web client or Zoom app version 5.7.0 or higher to use and see this feature.
  • To preserve bandwidth for shared content or to avoid mental fatigue from viewing multiple, active video participants, users can stop all incoming videos. This will only affect the individual user’s view of the meeting, while others are unaffected and unaware.
  • Hosts can allow alternative hosts to add or edit polls. The alternative host will have the additional in-meeting poll options, which launches the web portal to make changes.
Note: Beginning November 1, users must update their Zoom software to ensure it is no more than nine months behind the current version at any given time. From that point on, users will be prompted to update their software when using the platform should their version fall behind this nine-month window.
